Gornergrat, Switzerland
The following photos were taken during two trips to the former KOSMA observatory at the Gornergrat in Switzerland in December 2002 and November 2003. The observatory hosted a 3-m telescope for sub-mm observations and was jointly operated by the Universities of Cologne and Bonn. The high altitude of 3100 m and the surrounding glaciers are accountable for exceptionally low water vapour levels in the atmosphere, allowing for sub-mm observations up to the highest frequencies of about 1 THz under optimal conditions.
